Volcanoes: How they shaped, and reshape the Hawaiian Islands.

eruption1                                                                 Kilauea

In Science we are learning about the processes that shape our earth, both fast and slow.  Volcanoes are a fast process.  Of course volcanoes are an important element in the creation of the Hawaiian Islands. We learned that the very newest land on Earth is on the Island of Hawaii.  If you would like to watch a full PBS episode on the Kilauea Volcano click here.  Talk to your child about the lava flow experiment we did with cake batter in class.  We are getting excited to visit Kilauea in March!

Kamehameha: the Man, the Legends, the Prophecies.

We have been hard at work learning about Hawaiian culture and the people who have had an influence on it.  Even though Kamehameha was a real person there are many mysteries about him.  Nobody knows exactly when he was born, and there is some speculation about who his father is.  Priests foretold that his birth would challenge the rule of Alapa'inui. Because of this his mother had him hid for the beginning part of his life.  He was trained as a warrior during his teenage years.  Ask your child to tell you the story of Kamehameha and the Naha Stone.
